As a middle grade and young adult author with six years of experience teaching upper elementary and middle school, I love engaging directly with readers and students! I am able to schedule in-person visits to schools in the Los Angeles area, as well as virtual visits anywhere!

Please get in touch using the form below to discuss your school’s particular needs, package rates, and availability.

  • Drop-In

    (20 minutes)

In this short session, I will provide a brief introductory discussion of my work and writing process, including how a story goes from a first draft through the entire writing process to become a published book. We end with a Q&A with students. Only available as a virtual visit.

  • Author Talk

    (45-60 minutes)

I give a deep dive into my books and publishing experience, ending with an interactive Q&A with students. This session focuses on the writing process, as I share insights into the process of writing as an individual and of working with a publisher. I share elements of a first draft, show how editors help shape a story through revisions, and explore the magical world of copy editing for grammar and consistency. We will look at the way a story takes shape, changes in revisions, and then keeps on changing!

  • Workshop

(Available in 45-60 minute or 2 hour blocks)

In this hands-on writing workshop, I combine an author visit with a chance for students to study an aspect of the writing craft and ultimately write their own stories! This visit begins with an introductory session about my writing through the lens of the chosen topic and a deeper dive into the topic of the workshop. We end with an interactive Q&A with students followed by a chance for students to write and share their own stories. Topics include:

Retellings: We will explore one of the most commonly asked questions: where do authors get their ideas? To find one of many possible answers, we will discuss how authors are inspired by other stories, and consider the classic stories that have been retold again and again. Students will then begin to draft their own pieces inspired by a story they love.

  • Curriculum Tie In

    (45-60 minutes)

With either an author visit or workshop, I draw on my experience as a full time classroom teacher to craft author visits that tie directly into your curriculum and what students are learning. In this more personalized package, I will tailor the topic of the discussion to students’ classroom learning and needs.
